The Future of the PMO

According to PM Solutions Research, the percentage of enterprise businesses using PMOs has risen from 48% in 2000, to 85% in 2016. In addition, 30% of companies without a PMO plan to implement one within the next year. With such a substantial percentage of organizations turning to PMOs for their project management needs, and with the ever-growing market of PPM and work management tools, how is the role of the PMO evolving?

Let’s first consider how companies themselves are changing in the face of digitization. In this age of permanent connectivity and new consumer expectations, businesses are now expected to respond much faster to market and customer demands. An organization working in silos (be it of people, information, or data), and therefore suffering from a lack of productivity and collaboration, will quickly find itself unable to change at the pace that is necessary to keep up with the market and the competition.

PMOs need to take the lead when it comes to advocating for and implementing systems that allow their organizations to be highly responsive.It is a natural extension of their role to help organize the interdependencies between their human, digital, and physical resources. This more efficient and collaborative way of working, known as WorkOps, creates a clear path from strategy to execution by infusing data and automation into every aspect of the organization.

The good news is that PMOs won’t have to push too hard to build their business case for WorkOps. According to a 2018 study by 451 Research, the single most wanted improvement in overall work experience by employees is a better ability to plan and organize work. In fact, 47% of technology decision-makers report they are upgrading, reevaluating or considering deploying a new workflow automation platform.

With the implementation of these new workflows and tools comes a decentralization of work, as WorkOps essentially empowers everyone to become to a project manager. This creates a need for enhanced centralized oversight and guidance on how best to design, manage, and report on work. By taking on this new responsibility, PMOs are on track to become key strategic and organizational assets within the enterprise.
